What is a digital product passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a standardized digital record that provides detailed information about a product – e.g. its materials, origin, environmental impact, and lifecycle.

A DPP consist of two core elements: a physical identifier, such as a QR code or RFID tag, and a software solution that is used to securely store, update, and share the product information throughout the product's lifecycle.

DPPs will become mandatory for many physical products in the EU between 2026 and 2030, enforced by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Read more from our free DPP guide.

DPPs collect data throughout the value chain

Collect, manage, and share data throughout the value chain

Digital Product Passports require companies to gather, manage, and share data across the entire value chain, from raw material extraction to end-of-life management, and everything in between. Tracking Cloud® provides all the necessary tools for this:

  • Collect data from any required source: raw material suppliers, component manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, etc.
  • Manage, store and update the data throughout the lifecycle of a product to ensure accuracy & compliance.
  • Share the data with all stakeholders – consumers, authorities, retailers, etc. – powered by common tech standards such as the GS1 Digital Link.

A single identifier can be used by every stakeholder group

By utilizing the latest technology standards such as the GS1 Digital Link and our powerful Resolver Tool, Tracking Cloud® enables you to use a single QR code to display and access different information depending on who is scanning it.

If the scanner is a consumer, they might have access to only the basic information such as user manuals. For a maintenance technician, the same code could provide different information – e.g., repair manuals, spare parts lists, and maintenance records. For an authority, it could be for example certificates - and so forth.
