Frequently asked questions about EUDR

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a new regulation that aims to reduce global deforestation, forest degradation, and biodiversity loss by keeping deforestation-linked products out of the EU market. It requires companies to prove that their raw materials have not caused deforestation through accurate supply chain traceability and strict due diligence to ensure products are “deforestation-free.”

The EUDR applies to most companies placing relevant products on the EU market or exporting them from the EU, regardless of their size or location. The specific requirements vary depending on the company’s size and role in the supply chain. Read more from our free EUDR guide.

The EUDR timeline has been revised several times, but under the current decision, large and medium-sized companies must begin complying with the requirements as of 30 December 2026. For micro and small enterprises, the regulation will apply from 30 June 2027.

Due to the high uncertainty, businesses should act now to prepare systems for traceability, geolocation, and risk assessment to ensure compliance no matter what happens with the schedule. If you are uncertain what is required from your company, don't hesitate to contact us.

The EUDR applies to seven key commodities and products derived from them:

  • Cattle (including beef)
  • Cocoa
  • Coffee
  • Oil palm (including palm oil and derivatives)
  • Rubber
  • Soy
  • Wood (including timber, furniture, and paper products)

Non-compliance with EUDR can result in severe penalties issued by authorities, including:

  • Fines of up to 4% of annual EU turnover
  • Confiscation of products or revenues
  • Temporary exclusion from public procurement or access to EU markets

On top of these direct penalties, non-compliance can lead to even greater harm if a company’s customers refuse to accept products without proper EUDR documentation, such as verified Due Diligence Statements (DDS). In the worst case this can bring the entire business to a halt.
