The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a new regulation that aims to reduce global deforestation, forest degradation, and biodiversity loss by keeping deforestation-linked products out of the EU market. It requires companies to prove that their raw materials have not caused deforestation through accurate supply chain traceability and strict due diligence to ensure products are “deforestation-free.”
The EUDR applies to seven key commodities and products derived from them:
The EUDR applies to most companies placing relevant products on the EU market or exporting them from the EU, regardless of their size or location. The specific requirements vary depending on the company’s size and role in the supply chain. Read more from our free EUDR guide.
Non-compliance with EUDR can result in severe penalties issued by authorities, including:
On top of these direct penalties, non-compliance can lead to even greater harm if a company’s customers refuse to accept products without proper EUDR documentation, such as verified Due Diligence Statements (DDS). In the worst case this can bring the entire business to a halt.
The exact timeline of EUDR has been – and still is – a heated discussion topic in the EU parliament in 2025. According to the current decision, the EUDR will enter into force on December 30, 2025, but there are also proposed changes which could postpone it by a full year, if accepted by the parliament. Due to the high uncertainty, businesses should act now to prepare systems for traceability, geolocation, and risk assessment to ensure compliance no matter what happens with the schedule.
